Resident Black Belts

Jeff Sass

OWNER/HEAD INSTRUCTOR

Jeff has been training in Martial Arts since the age of 13. He has trained extensively in numerous styles including Japanese Jujutsu, Tae Kwon Do, Ninjutsu, Shinkendo, Hapkido and Eskrima. Jeff holds multiple Black Belts, but in 2008, he decided to strap on the white belt again and began his journey into the depths of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

The highly effective and complex art quickly became an obsession for him. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu then became his main passion and focus. He earned his Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu on April 5, 2018 under Professor Jon Friedland. He also has over 20 years’ experience as Police Officer and has trained many officers in defense/arrest tactics as well as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Garrett Erickson

PROFESSOR

Garrett’s grappling journey began as a high school wrestler in the 1980s. He went on to wrestle two more years at the junior college level. In 1999, he started training in Jiu Jitsu at the Monkey Bar Gym in Madison, which was affiliated through Luiz Claudio (LCCT). Garrett later moved to Wausau and opened up the first BJJ club there and taught for 7 years. On December 10, 2010, Luiz Claudio awarded Garrett his black belt. Garrett feels very fortunate for having had the opportunity to train under Luiz and his brother Thiago Veiga for many years. In 2013, Garrett accepted a new job in Sheboygan and then took a long break from training. Fast forward several years, and after a good tongue-lashing from his doctor, Garrett joined Neutral Ground and started training again. He loves the relaxed environment and positive tone at Neutral Ground, set by Jeff Sass and Jon Friedland, and plans to keep training as long as he is able.
